The news regarding the disposal of up to 30% of the defence estate also comes as Network Rail announces plans to unlock land for 12,000 new homes by 2020.  Around 5,000 homes will be developed on surplus sites in London, 3,000 in Manchester and the north, 1,700 in the Midlands and East and 1,400 in the South.

We understand Network Rail will be looking to partner with developers when disposing of the sites and some will be clustered into portfolios which may allow them to be brought to the market by Spring 2017.

Network Rail will be working closely with the HCA, London Land Commission, Local Authorities and the private sector to bring the identified sites forward.

Amongst others, key sites to be sold include:

  • Exchange Station, Manchester
  • Chestertown, Cambridge
